Jing An Temple's main deity is Lord Su; Guan Sheng Di Jun (Wen Heng Sheng Di) is enshrined in the right niche and Li Fu Da Shen in the left. At the altar front are the Second and Third Royal Lords Su and Prince Nezha, with the Eight Generals as vanguard guardians, the Tiger General guarding the hall, and the Five Encampment Armies watching over the five directions. Together in one hall, loyalty and divine might are made manifest, guarding the peace of the Beihua community in Guanmiao for generations.
Lord Su is a venerated deity of Taiwan's folk “Wangye” (Royal Lord) faith. By imperial decree he undertakes “inspection on Heaven's behalf” — patrolling the human world, driving away plague, rewarding good and punishing evil, and protecting the community. At Jing An Temple his statue is majestic, its crown and jewels resplendent; bathed in divine light and wreathed in incense, his might is manifest and his blessing reaches all.
The incense of Lord Su at Jing An Temple began in 1661: Lu Qiang — a native of Longxi, Zhangzhou and ancestor of the Fanyang Lu clan — came with Koxinga's army and settled at “Zhuweinei” in this village, reverently bringing the principal image of Royal Lord Su from his homeland and first enshrining it in the Lu clan hall. In 1766 the Lu clan formed a “Wangye Society” for private worship; in 1973 it was reorganized into a management committee and named “Jing An Temple”; in 1999 the new temple was consecrated. From clan worship it became a community public temple — the shared faith center of Beihua, Guanmiao for generations.
The attendant deities of the side niches, those before the altar, and the vanguard guardians share one hall with Lord Su — embodying loyalty, divine might and guardianship together, watching over the peace of the community.
Guan Yu, the celebrated Three Kingdoms general, loyal and righteous through the ages, revered by the people as the God of War; as “Wen Heng Sheng Di” he is also one of the Five Gods of Literature, presiding over scholarly fortune. Enshrined in the right niche, he guards loyalty and righteousness and wards off evil.
A deity who guards the region and grants blessings while averting disaster. Enshrined in the left niche, he flanks Lord Su together with Guan Sheng Di Jun, watching over the peace of the community and the wellbeing of every household.
Venerable Royal Lords of the Su lineage, of the same origin as Lord Su. Enshrined before the altar, they undertake inspection on Heaven's behalf with manifest might, guarding the community and averting misfortune.
Prince Nezha, the Marshal of the Central Altar, who commands the Five Encampment Armies and leads the vanguard against evil. Enshrined before the altar, mighty in divine power and foremost in guardianship, he watches over the peace of the community.
Guardian generals before the deity's palanquin, tasked with seizing evil spirits and escorting the deity on procession. With solemn ritual steps and stern majesty, they form an essential guardian troupe in the procession.
General Tiger, enshrined beneath the altar as the lower-altar guardian, protects the hall and temple and wards off evil; the people also revere him as a bringer of wealth and a protector of children.
The divine soldiers and generals of the five encampments — East, South, West, Center and North — each bearing a five-colored command banner (green, red, white, black, yellow), guard the five directions of the village and escort the deity. At appointed times the armies are feasted and rewarded, praying for the peace of the whole community.
